The NSMV is designed to be a highly-functional national asset dedicated to training the next generation of maritime professionals. TOTE Services was selected to manage the construction of the fleet because of our ability to deliver complex vessels, at a remarkable pace, and to exacting standards. Beyond training, these vessels are purpose built to respond to national emergencies and humanitarian crises, featuring state-of-the-art hospital facilities, helicopter landing pad, roll-on/roll-off ramp, and container storage for rapid disaster relief. In 2015 and 2016, the Isla Bella and Perla Del Caribe were introduced to the Puerto Rican trade as the world’s first liquified natural gas (LNG) powered container ship.
In addition to reducing air pollutants, the Marlin Class vessels reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20%. Building on this innovation, in 2023, the Orca Class vessels serving the Alaska trade were converted to LNG.
