Earlier this month (May 9), Sophie Sacco, ship sponsor to the Isla Bella, visited the ship and crew while at Jaxport. On April 18, 2015, Sophie Sacco christened the Isla Bella just before she was launched at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego, CA. The Isla Bella, crewed by TOTE Services, is the world’s first LNG-powered containership and has been serving the Puerto Rico trade since January 2016.
The Isla Bella represents the next generation in shipping technology. Therefore it was fitting that Mrs. Sacco the wife of Michael Sacco, President of the Seafarers International Union (SIU), serve as the ships sponsor. Mrs. Sacco and her husband have been involved with the maritime community for decades. Mrs. Sacco has christened many ships and also has a ship named after her.
Since the christening and launch of the Isla Bella, Mrs. Sacco has been excited to visit the ship and her crew once in service. For the crew of the Isla Bella, it was an honor to have the ship’s sponsor return to the vessel and experience the beauty of the ship. Mrs. Sacco took a keen interest in all aspects of the vessels technology and cargo operations.
